Dubai’s leading hip-hop collective, The Recipe, is back with another banger ‘Uma Thurman’ off their forthcoming album Funerals & Purgatory. The 11-track album will release early this Fall. It will include their previous hits; “Bandana” and “Place To Rest” featuring Talib Kweli and Spark Master Tape.
When asked about the meaning behind “Uma Thurman,” rapper Kaz Money said: “This track is the culmination of almost 10 years of grinding and we feel like it’s time to wake these people up. It represents literal blood, sweat, and tears for us. We feel like it’s the perfect way to start the album, an adrenaline shot to the heart like that classic scene with Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction. The music video’s powerful and frenetic visuals match the track’s energy, and the ensuing battle is open for everyone’s interpretation. ‘Uma Thurman,’ is our way of waking the people up.”
In addition to being featured on CNN’s Great Big Story and Jaden Smith’s Beats 1 show MSFTS Frequency, the group dropped two videos late last year. Their first video for “Place To Rest” features Talib Kweli and Spark Master Tape. Also, It premiered on Afropunk and was well-received by fans and critics alike, including praise from Paul Rosenberg (Eminem, Danny Brown, Action Bronson) who tweeted about it numerous times. The trio launched their next video for “Bandana” on Hip Hop DX after initially releasing the song on The Boombox.
The Recipe began as a project designed to bring talented hip-hop artists in the United Arab Emirates together. The project goal is to record a compilation album and help promote the culture. Upon completion of the mixtape, the collective launched the project with a sold out event – the first hip-hop show headlined by regional artists. The Recipe evolved into an independent label acting as a vehicle to launch solo projects from members such as Perfect Storm’s The Calm Before, Kaz Money’s The Ridicule/The Opposition as well as Swerte’s The Quicktape series.
Who is “The Recipe?
Today, The Recipe is a group that consists of 3 MC’s; Perfect Storm, Kaz Money, Swerte. They are striving to push the boundaries of regional hip-hop achievements. After many mixtapes, the trio released a studio album with their first commercial track “Death To Get Here”. On August 17, 2015, the single hit #1 on the UAE Hip-Hop Chart.
Following the success of “Death To Get Here,” The Recipe releases “Throwback To The Future”. This mixtape is dedicated to old-school hip-hop and hosted by the legendary DJ Hurricane of the Beastie Boys. They performed at clubs, art shows, exhibitions, festivals, charity gigs and concerts as the main act. They’ve been featured in Rolling Stone, The Source, Hip-Hop DX, RESPECT Magazine, and more.
